API developed a specific gravity scale called the API Gravity that determines the heaviness of crude oil. The formula is … API Gravity = (141.5/SG) – 131.5. In the formula, SG refers to the specific gravity of the substance referenced to another substance. In crude measurement, the reference substance is pure water. Medium – Medium crude oil has an API gravity that ranges between 22.3 °API and 31.1 °API. Heavy – Heavy crude oil has an API gravity that ranges between 22.2 °API and 10 °API. Extra Heavy (Bitumen) – Extra heavy crude oil has an API gravity that is lower than 10 °API. API gravity express the gravity or density of crude oil and liquid petroleum products. API is devised jointly by the American Petroleum Institute and the NIST - National Institute of Standards and Technology. The measuring scale is calibrated in terms of degrees API. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Spot Price: Saudi Crude Oil: Arabian Medium 31 API data remains active status in CEIC and is reported by Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority. The data is categorized under Global Database’s Saudi Arabia – Table SA.P012: Energy Prices. State-level data show the difference in crude oil API gravity in different parts of the country. For example, oil produced in Texas has a relatively broad distribution of API gravities, with most production ranging from 30–50 degrees API. Oil produced in North Dakota tends to be light (less dense).

API gravity is one of the key characteristics of crude oil that, along with other characteristics such as sulfur content, is used by refiners when evaluating different crude streams for processing into petroleum products. In 2016, the majority (51%) of the 8.4 million barrels per day (b/d) of crude oil produced in the Lower 48 states was light oil, or less dense oil with an API gravity of 40.1

Examples: Flotta, Bonny Light, Oman Based on API gravity they are classified as heavy (<24°), medium (24° to 33°) and light (>33°). Likewise, there are six main varieties of crude oil: heavy sour, medium sour, light sour, heavy Each colored line represents a crude oil with a given density at a given temperature. If the temperature changes, the density of the crude oil changes along the colored line. Examples of the use of the figures are given below the figures. If you have the crude density given in °API, use the API-to-gravity converter. Crude grades. Crude oil comes in hundreds of different varieties or "grades." These grades are valued differently by refiners based on their crude qualities.. Some of the more common crude oil grades that have regular price assessments are:
